Get ready to two-step and cumbia in the same breath. South Texas Country artist Cris Medina has released “Honky Tonk Cumbia”, a genre-fusing anthem that merges the heart of Tejano with the grit of Texas Country.
Written by Javier Molina and produced by Mike Aguilar, Jr. and Luke Salas, the track showcases a unique musical blend with the help of special guest Jason Harvey, one of Texas Country’s most electrifying guitarists. Released under RanchFire Media Group, the single captures the spirit of a Saturday night in San Antonio.
“This song is puro South Texas,” says Medina. “We wanted something that felt like a Saturday night in San Antonio—where the jukebox flips from Freddy Fender to George Strait and nobody misses a beat.”
With Harvey’s signature guitar licks weaving around bajo sexto and accordion, “Honky Tonk Cumbia” delivers a dance floor-ready vibe that highlights the beauty of musical borderlands and bicultural pride.
“Cris brought a vision that was both bold and rooted,” says producer Aguilar. “We leaned into the fusion—country grit, Tejano groove, and a catchy beat that gives it pop.”
For Medina, the single is more than just a song—it’s a cultural statement.
“It’s really a sonic handshake between traditions,” he explains. “Honky Tonk Cumbia is what happens when Tex-Mex and Texas Country meet on the dance floor.”
The release also comes as part of Medina’s broader creative push, which includes the launch of his podcast “Tex-Mex Twang” and collaborations with civic and cultural partners across Texas.
