Tejano ROOTS Hall of Fame member and cultural preservationist Gigi “La Sheekana” Guerrero has released her latest single, “Pero Eso No”, alongside David Lee Garza, the multi-Grammy Award-winning accordionist. The release carries a profound significance, as it features rare studio footage of the last recording session with her late father, legendary composer and Tejano pioneer Juan Guerrero, founder of Los Sheekanos.
Born and raised in Mission, Texas, Gigi grew up immersed in the vibrant traditions of Tejano music under her father’s guidance. An educator, songwriter, performer, and advocate for cultural preservation, she has continued her father’s legacy while carving out her own path in music.
The recording of “Pero Eso No” took place at Paulino Bernal Studios in McAllen, with Ernesto Bernal and producer Rick Garcia of CHR Records. In a recent interview with TV show Domingo Live, Gigi reflected on the release and her journey:
“I was always under my dad’s shadow and I was fine there. I was comfortable there,” Gigi shared. “I was just backup vocalist and lead vocalist at times, right? Because that’s what you gotta do. My dad needed a break and my dad was just such a giant influence in my life.”
Gigi added about the studio recording footage, “It was the last time I stood beside my dad doing what we loved, and now the world can experience that moment with us. This video is so special because it’s not staged—it’s the real recording session with my father and David Lee Garza.”
The video offers fans an intimate glimpse into the creative process, preserving not just a song but a moment in Tejano history. Studio footage of this kind is exceedingly rare, making the debut a historic cultural milestone.

Gigi recalled her father’s guiding words—“Mija, el miedo no sirve para nada” (“Fear is of no use”)—which continue to inspire her as she balances her calling as a teacher and her passion for music. “I thank God every day that he chose Juan Guerrero to be my dad. It has given me purpose in my life,” she said.
The release of “Pero Eso No” not only honors Juan Guerrero’s enduring legacy but also highlights the living tradition of Tejano music through David Lee Garza’s artistry and Gigi’s heartfelt performance.
The single is now available on all major streaming platforms.
