Estani Revives Lost Conjunto Gems from Grandmother’s Archives

AUSTIN, TX — Austin-based artist Estani is breathing new life into the forgotten sounds of South Texas Conjunto music with her upcoming album Tú De Mí Te Acordarás, set for release on July 11. This deeply personal project is built around long-lost recordings from the Conjunto career of her grandmother, Rosita Lopez, a San Antonio singer active in the 1960s and ’70s. With the help of GRAMMY-winning legends Max Baca and Los Texmaniacs, Estani reimagines these vintage gems for today’s audience while preserving the raw emotion and tradition of the originals.

“This album is like a love letter to my family, to San Antonio, South Texas, and to women in this genre whose voices weren’t always heard but whose stories deserve to be sung,” Estani shared.

Originally envisioned as a four-track EP, the album blossomed into a full-length collection after Estani uncovered more rare material through the archives of La Frontera Foundation. Among the discoveries were songs written by Ana R. Ovalle, an often-overlooked female songwriter who penned tracks specifically for Estani’s grandmother. These songs now shine anew with Estani’s signature expressive vocals, fresh arrangements, and the authentic instrumentation of accordion and bajo sexto.

Recorded at Max Baca’s Bat Cave Studios in San Antonio and polished at Lechehouse Music with Beto Martinez (Grupo Fantasma), Tú De Mí Te Acordarás seamlessly bridges generations. The album also includes spoken-word interludes from Rosita Lopez, now 90 years old, who shares the memories and meaning behind each track, making this a truly intergenerational work of art.

The lead single, “Mi Suerte Ha Cambiado,” available now on all platforms, features a duet with Max Baca and serves as a taste of the album’s emotional depth and rhythmic precision. Other standout tracks include the emotionally raw “Para Qué Recordar,” captured in one take, and Estani’s original waltz “Siempreverde,” a haunting ballad inspired by the timeless folk classic “La Llorona.”

“I loved the haunting sound of ‘La Llorona’ so much that I wanted to capture it for myself in my own personal writing,” said Estani. “I first recorded ‘Siempreverde’ during the pandemic, but because working with groups of people was limited at the time, I recorded it with a piano player and myself on cello. Once I knew I was recording this entire album, I decided to re-record ‘Siempreverde’ with the original intention—as a strong ¾ ballad with the sound of the requinto as the push behind the song.”

To complement the album, Estani is also directing a documentary of the same name, Tú De Mí Te Acordarás, which explores the rich cultural history and continuing legacy of Conjunto music in South Texas. The film shines a spotlight on the genre’s overlooked heroines and today’s emerging voices, particularly Latina artists carrying the torch forward. A trailer for the documentary is already generating buzz, further underscoring Estani’s commitment to preserving and evolving the tradition.

This marks Estani’s third studio album, and perhaps her most ambitious yet—a melding of archival revival, personal tribute, and cultural preservation. With past experience as lead vocalist for the group Ascension, background vocalist for international stars Laura Pausini and Joan Sebastian, and a published children’s book author, Estani continues to prove her versatility and passion for storytelling through multiple creative outlets.

From the heart of Austin to the soul of San Antonio, Tú De Mí Te Acordarás is more than music—it’s a reclamation of legacy, a celebration of Conjunto’s roots, and a rallying cry for the future of Latina voices in Tejano and regional Mexican music.
