Tejano music icon Ruben Ramos, affectionately known as “El Gato Negro,” is recovering after undergoing surgery on his vocal cords, according to a statement released by his official Facebook page, Ruben Ramos and The Mexican Revolution.
The post shared with fans said, “Ruben Ramos ‘El Gato Negro’ had a procedure done on his vocal cords. Everything went well! Please join us on praying for complete healing and recovery!”
The 85-year-old singer has faced health challenges in recent years, including triple bypass heart surgery in 2018. Despite these hurdles, Ramos has continued to perform and record music, proving his enduring passion and resilience in the Tejano music scene.
Earlier this month, Ramos teamed up with fellow musicians La 45 to release Vol. 1: Recordando El León de la Sierra, a heartfelt tribute album honoring his late brother, Alfonso Ramos. Alfonso was a pioneering figure in Chicano and Tejano music, and the album reflects the deep musical roots and emotional bond the Ramos family shares.
Born in Sugar Land, Texas, Ruben Ramos began his professional music career in the 1960s and went on to form Ruben Ramos and The Mexican Revolution in the early 1970s. Over the decades, he has become a pillar of Tejano music, known for his smooth vocals, energetic stage presence, and dedication to cultural preservation. In 2008, Ramos was recognized with a Grammy Award for Best Tejano Album, cementing his legacy in the genre.
