AUSTIN, TX — The legacy of late Tejano TV icon Johnny Canales was honored on the floor of the Texas State Capitol in Austin by Texas State Senator Adam Hinojosa on Tuesday, March 4, 2025. In a poignant ceremony, Senator Hinojosa presented Senate Resolution 191 in memory of Canales, recognizing his immense contributions to the Tejano music scene and the Latino community. Canales’ family members attended the event, including his wife, Nora Canales, and their daughters, Zelestial and Miroslava.
In his speech, Senator Hinojosa celebrated Canales as “a true Tejano legend,” emphasizing the cultural impact of his show, The Johnny Canales Show. “Today, I have the distinct honor of presenting a resolution in memory of a true Tejano legend, Johnny Canales, a man whose voice, charisma, and passion for music brought joy to millions,” Hinojosa said. “For so many of us, The Johnny Canales Show was more than just a television show. It was a cultural institution.”
Hinojosa reflected on how Johnny Canales helped elevate Tejano music, serving as a platform for both established stars and emerging talent. “Every Sunday, families across Texas and beyond gathered around their televisions to watch Johnny showcase the best in Tejano and regional Mexican music,” he added. “His stage introduced us to rising stars, including a young Selena Quintanilla from Corpus Christi, giving them a platform long before mainstream audiences took notice.”
In addition to his dedication to Tejano music, Hinojosa highlighted Canales’ commitment to his family. “But beyond the bright lights and the music, Johnny Canales’ heart was always with his family,” he said, acknowledging the essential role that Nora Canales played both in his life and in the success of his television show. “Together they created something truly special, and their love for each other was evident in everything they did.”
Johnny Canales passed away in June 2024 at the age of 81, leaving behind an enduring legacy. He was beloved not only for his charismatic personality but also for his unwavering dedication to promoting Tejano music and culture. The Johnny and Nora Canales Show became an essential platform for Tejano artists, providing exposure to stars like Selena, Emilio Navaira, and many others who would later go on to become household names.
Hinojosa concluded his tribute with a reference to Canales’ iconic catchphrase: “You got it. Take it away.” It was a phrase that resonated with fans and became synonymous with his unique energy and enthusiasm. “Watching Johnny on TV was part of our Sunday routine, and I know I’m not alone in that sentiment,” Hinojosa shared, recalling the impact Canales had on his own life.
Canales’ contributions to Tejano music have been immortalized in the upcoming documentary Take It Away: The Rise and Fall of Tejano Hollywood. The film is currently in production and is expected to offer a deeper look into Canales’ pioneering role in shaping Tejano music, as well as his lasting influence on the genre.
Though Johnny Canales is no longer with us, his legacy continues to live on through the music, the memories, and the pride he instilled in all who were touched by his work. Through this recognition by the Texas State Senate, it is clear that Johnny’s spirit will always be a cherished part of Tejano culture.
