Netflix is reportedly in negotiations to secure a $6 million to $7 million deal for the rights to Selena Y Los Dinos, a documentary directed by Isabel Castro about the life and legacy of the late Selena Quintanilla-Perezaccording to Deadline. The film has already garnered significant attention after winning a Special Jury Award in the U.S. Documentary Competition at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, where its popularity quickly surpassed expectations. The film had to be pulled from the festival’s industry portal after enthusiastic fans were able to obtain and share clips from the much-anticipated project.

While the deal is still in the works, the rumored price tag is a clear indication of the documentary’s high value in today’s entertainment market, especially given that documentaries typically command much lower budgets than their narrative counterparts. Selena Y Los Dinos has caught the attention of other bidders as well, with Cinetic handling the auction. This has sparked even more anticipation, as the film celebrates Selena’s meteoric rise to fame with never-before-seen footage from the Quintanilla family’s personal archive.

The documentary, which will have its Texas premiere at the SXSW Film & TV Festival next month in Austin, delves into Selena’s journey from performing at local quinceañeras to becoming an international star. It explores the emotional and inspiring story of Selena and her band, Selena Y Los Dinos, as they navigated the ups and downs of the music industry. Tragically, Selena’s life was cut short at just 23 years old when she was murdered by Yolanda Saldivar, a former fan club president. The documentary commemorates Selena’s impact on the Latina community and music industry, especially as the 30th anniversary of her death approaches.

Executive produced by Selena’s sister Suzette Quintanilla and her brother A.B. Quintanilla III, and produced by Julie GoldmanChristopher ClementsJ. Daniel TorresDavid Blackman, and Simran SinghSelena Y Los Dinos has already made waves with its emotional and powerful portrayal of the “Queen of Cumbia”. This deal signals that the documentary may soon reach a broader audience, further cementing Selena’s enduring legacy.

Stay tuned for updates on this exciting project.
