HOUSTON, TEXAS — On March 29, the Miller Outdoor Theatre will host a remarkable tribute to the women who have shaped and enriched the Tejano and Conjunto music scene. The free event, “Voces Y Recuerdos,” is the brainchild of Tejano musician and event organizer Jennifer Watts, founder of the concert series Noche Tejana. The evening promises to celebrate the influential and resilient women of Tejano, showcasing their invaluable contributions to the genre.
For Watts, this event holds significant personal meaning. “Never did I imagine that I could bring Tejano and Conjunto music to a prestigious venue like the House of Blues, but I did it with an all-female lineup, and the feeling was incredible,” Watts shared. “And then, to think that I would showcase Tejano music with an all-female lineup at the Miller Outdoor Theater, a place where such representation is rare, was beyond my wildest dreams.”
As the Latin and Tejano music industries remain male-dominated, creating space for women in these spaces has proven to be an ongoing challenge. Watts recognizes the obstacles but celebrates the importance of breaking through those barriers. “The Latin/Tejano music industry is undeniably male-dominated, making it challenging for non-male artists, musicians, DJs, sound engineers, and promoters to be recognized or hired,” she explained. “Breaking through these barriers and proving that women deserve their place in this industry has been a rewarding journey, despite the obstacles faced along the way.”
“Women of Tejano” is a term that holds deep significance in the Tejano community. These women are the unsung heroes whose influence has shaped not only the music but also the cultural identity of Tejano and Conjunto traditions. They have broken barriers, challenged stereotypes, and paved the way for future generations. The legacies of these women are seen in the vibrant rhythms and melodies that continue to inspire and empower the next wave of musicians, artists, and community leaders.
Through “Voces Y Recuerdos,” Watts hopes to highlight the powerful contributions these women have made to the genre. “Women of Tejano” are not just musicians—they are activists, community builders, and artists who have helped preserve and honor the traditions of Tejano heritage. Their stories are an essential part of the rich and diverse history of Tejano culture, and Watts is determined to amplify their voices.
On the night of the event, the Miller Outdoor Theatre will come alive with the sounds of Tejano music, as an all-female lineup takes the stage in celebration of these legendary women. The lineup will feature the incomparable Stefani Montiel, a six-time Grammy-nominated artist, along with a group of talented female artists who continue to shape the future of Tejano music. Although the full lineup is yet to be announced, “Voces Y Recuerdos” promises to be a night filled with unforgettable performances, musical tributes, and celebration of the women who have made Tejano music what it is today.
Jennifer Watts reflects on what the phrase “Women of Tejano” means to her: “It’s a symbol of empowerment, perseverance, and legacy. It represents the women who have fought to have their voices heard, despite the barriers they faced. These women not only paved the way for others but also ensured that Tejano music would continue to thrive for generations to come.”
As Watts prepares for this extraordinary evening, she encourages everyone to join her in honoring the contributions of women in Tejano music. “March 29th will be a night to remember,” she said. “We invite everyone to come out and experience the magic of Tejano music, as we pay tribute to the women who have made it what it is.”
The free event is presented by Noche Tejana and promises to be a powerful and inspiring tribute to the women who have helped shape Tejano music into a living, breathing legacy. Don’t miss out on this celebration of the genre’s rich history and the incredible women behind it.
