Fort Worth, Texas — In a historic night for Tejano music, legendary singer Ram Herrera took home the Tejano Category award at the 2025 Texas Country Music Awards, held Sunday (Nov. 9) at Billy Bob’s Texas in Fort Worth. The event, produced by the Texas Country Music Association (TCMA), continues to spotlight the vibrant range of Texas-born sounds — from country to Tejano — celebrating the artists who keep the state’s musical heritage alive.

This year’s Tejano finalists included Texas Latino, Keith Nieto, Ram Herrera, Nuevo Regimen, and Sunny Sauceda, who won the inaugural award in 2024. The nominees showcased the depth, diversity, and enduring influence of Tejano music across the Lone Star State.

Texas is so blessed to have such spectacular talent,” said Linda Wilson, President and Founder of the TCMA. “There were literally thousands of nominees – each one gifted and unique — and we at TCMA are very honored to be able to work on all their behalf on an ongoing basis.”

The addition of the Tejano category to the Texas Country Music Awards in 2024 marked a significant milestone for the genre. The initiative was led by Wilson with assistance from Sunny Sauceda, the three-time GRAMMY-winning Tejano and Country artist, to ensure Tejano artists are recognized alongside the best in Texas music.

The Texas Country Music Association, recognized by the State of Texas as the primary advocate for the state’s country music industry, is the largest and most influential organization supporting Texas Country and its related genres, including Tejano.

Known as “The Outlaw” of Tejano music, Ram Herrera’s impact on the genre spans more than four decades. He first rose to prominence in the early 1980s as the powerhouse lead vocalist for David Lee Garza y Los Musicales before launching a successful solo career with his band, The Outlaws. His gold-certified 1986 debut Most Wanted Man and the 1989 classic The Outlaw cemented his reputation as one of Tejano’s most iconic voices.

Over his 45-year career, Herrera has earned GRAMMY and Latin GRAMMY nominations, multiple Tejano Music Awards, and delivered chart-topping hits that remain timeless Tejano staples. Despite publicly sharing his stage 4 prostate cancer diagnosis in September, Herrera continues to perform and inspire fans with his unwavering strength and dedication to the music that defines him.
