Miami International Airport Closing A Terminal Due To Government Shutdown

Travelers use the automated screening lanes funded by American Airlines and installed by the Transportation Security Administration at Miami International Airport

If you are planning to fly into or out of Miami International Airport this weekend you should plan for delays. Officials said that they are closing Terminal G at 1 p.m. on Saturday (January 12). They will reopen it for a few hours on Sunday morning, but it will close again at 1 p.m. Terminal G serves United Airlines and other smaller airlines.

Officials said that TSA agents at the airport are calling out sick at twice the normal rate and they are worried they will not have enough staff to work all 11 checkpoints at the airport. By closing Terminal G, they will be able to fully staff other, busier security checkpoints.

“We felt we had to make a decision before the weekend,” airport spokesman Greg Chin said. “They’re erring on the side of caution.”

United Airlines issued a statement and said they are working to ensure that travelers are not impacted by the closure of the terminal.

“We will work to ensure we do everything we can for our customers, and we do not expect any operational impact,” the airline said.
